Family-Owned · Sterling Glen, PA

Three generations of caring for the families of Sterling Glen.

Since 1947

If you're reading this, something hard has happened or might happen soon. We're sorry. We've been doing this for a long time, and we'd be honored to help.

Mike or I will pick up the phone — call any time of day or night. If it's easier, stop in. The kitchen is in the back; the coffee is usually on.

— Sarah Caldwell-Hayes, third-generation director

The same family. The same front door. Three generations.

Sarah Caldwell-Hayes

Director · 3rd Generation

Sarah took over from her father Bill in 2008, after three years at a regional chain in Pittsburgh that she politely calls "an education." She grew up in the apartment above the chapel and is raising her own two kids there now.

She answers the phone herself most weeknights. If you call after 9 PM she'll apologize for sounding like she just got out of bed; she did.

Mike Caldwell-Hayes

Director · Joined 2011

Mike joined Sarah at the chapel in 2011 after eight years at a hospital in State College. Licensed in PA since 2009. He handles most of the cemetery committals and the pre-planning visits at the diner.

He's the one who'll come pick you up if you can't drive.

1947

Tom Caldwell

Cabinetmaker turned funeral director. Opened the chapel in his shop on Maple after the war.

1972

Bill Caldwell

Ran the firm for thirty-six years. Deacon at First Methodist. Retired in 2008. Still drops in Saturdays.

2008

Sarah & Mike

Third generation. Two licensed directors, two children growing up in the apartment upstairs.

Four kinds of service. One way of doing things.

No. 01

Traditional Service

Visitation, chapel service, eulogy, committal at the cemetery off Route 322. We arrange the music, the program, the flowers, and the meal after.

About half the families we serve still pick this. There's a reason. The structure is part of the medicine.

No. 02

Cremation

About half our families now. We use Wakefield Crematory in Williamsport — the same partner Bill chose in 1985. We drive your loved one there ourselves.

Service can be in our chapel, at the cemetery, or at your home. Urns start at $215; you can also bring your own.

No. 03

Memorial Gathering

Sometimes the service doesn't come in the days after the death. We hold memorials weeks or months later — at the chapel, the cemetery, the garden, or your home.

Same care, different shape. The grief has had a chance to settle.

No. 04

Pre-Planning

We'll meet you at your kitchen table or at the diner on Pine. There's no charge. There's no obligation. There's a great deal of relief once it's written down.

Pre-funding is optional and held in a PA-regulated trust.

Behind the chapel, a place to come back to.

A quarter-acre of lilac and daffodil with a stone bench in the middle. Open daily. Anyone is welcome — family of someone we've served, or not.

The conversation worth having before it has to be had.

Most of the families we serve had planned at least a little — even the ones who say they hadn't. A note about the music. A passing remark about the cemetery off Route 322. A preference about a hymn.

Pre-planning gathers those scraps into one piece of paper. We'll come to your kitchen table, or we'll meet you at the diner on Pine — honestly we'd rather the diner; the booths are quiet and the coffee is good. No charge. No obligation.

Sarah's grandfather buried my grandfather. Her dad buried my dad. When my mother went last fall, calling the Caldwells wasn't a decision. It was the next thing on the list, and we knew the list.
